Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is the pest control product that not only kills insects, but is also safe for humans to eat. If you have never heard of diatomaceous earth, you may be missing out on a great organic tool for your pest control arsenal.

Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of ancient aquatic animals called diatoms. These diatoms are mined and then ground into a fine powder. Diatomaceous earth is safe for humans and pets, but the microscopic sharp edges are lethal for insects and other small, soft-bodied creatures. The edges will cut the outer coating of the insect, absorb the moisture, and slowly dehydrate the insect. Diatomaceous earth may take a couple of days to kill the pests, but since it is a mechanical form of pest control, pests can never develop a resistance to it.

Diatomaceous earth can be used outdoors or indoors, and is effective as long as it remains dry. Sprinkle DE around the edges of rooms, behind electrical outlets, inside wall voids, in gardens, or around the perimeter of your home. A bellow-type hand duster can also be used to get DE into cracks, crevices, and other hard to reach areas. When applying diatomaceous earth, take care not to breathe it in. Like any dust, DE can irritate the throat and lungs if inhaled. Also ensure that you only use pest or food grade diatomaceous earth and not brands intended for pool use.

Diatomaceous earth can work well in helping to control pests like ants, roaches, fleas, beetles, mites, slugs, and bed bugs. DE is a great addition to your pest control routine, but it is not a stand-alone solution for pests. Diatomaceous earth works best when used in combination with other pest control methods like sanitation, exclusion, and chemical control.
